“We” are Rod and Paige, a couple of Australians who have decided to leave the rat-race for a little while and enjoy a slower pace of lifefor a year in France. While here, we plan to cycle a lot in the countryside, learn the language a bit better and enjoy all the fantastic food & wine available in this beautiful, diverse and sometimes frustrating country. We will also try to cook as much as we can and will report on all regions, restaurants and sights as we go along.
After a combined total of 12 years of university, 52 years work, 4 kids, 8 houses and 3 marriages between us (all in Australia), we said bugger this for a joke, let’s have a real life. So we quit our jobs, sold up, bought something small and mortgage free and headed off to the French consulate in Sydney to apply for our visa de long séjour. This was our first taste of French bureaucracy.
Our plan was to arrive in France just before New Year’s Eve and spend a couple of weeks in Paris before departing to the Languedoc-Roussillon region in the deep south of France. Once there, we would apply for our carte de sejour which will give us 12 months residency. After about three months we will then head up to Bordeaux or southern Loire for a couple of months. Then we will make up the rest as we go.
Well “The Plan” got changed after the first trip to the French consulate with us having to gather more paperwork and make the trek back to Sydney to lodge it again, which also meant delaying our flights to arrive in Paris in the first week of January 2012. This is where our adventure begins. Welcome to our adventure!
